What are the types of hyperbaric chambers?
The Types of Hyperbaric Chambers
There are multiple types of hyperbaric chambers. The different chambers each have a specific use. There are chambers that are used in the medical setting, and other that can be use at home or clinical setting. Medical Grade hyperbaric chambers Monoplase, Polyplace hyperbaric chambers require a medical license and extensive certifications and approvals from state and federal agencies. Mild Hyperbaric chamber only require a prescription or medical license to own.
Monoplace hyperbaric chamber
The first type of hyperbaric chambers is monoplace hyperbaric chamber. A monoplace chamber holds one patient at a time. Often, the patient is in a reclined position. During treatment, the entire atmosphere inside a monoplace chamber is pressurized and filled with 100% oxygen. To prevent oxygen toxicity, a possible negative side effect of treatment, patients alternate between breathing normal air and breathing 100% oxygen. In the case of monoplace chambers.
Modern monoplace chamber designs have an excellent safety record. Patients in monoplace chambers are grounded, as is the chamber itself, to prevent sparks from static electricity, which could cause accidents.
Multiplace Hyperbaric Chambers
In contrast to monoplace chambers, another type of hyperbaric chambers is the multiplace hyperbaric chambers hold many patients at a time. In multiplace chambers, the ambient pressurized atmosphere is normal air. Patients receive pure oxygen through a hood, mask, or endotracheal tube. Patients take periodic breaks from the 100% oxygen to prevent oxygen toxicity. Clinical staff accompanying patients may also breathe oxygen through a mask to prevent decompression sickness.
The design and construction of multiplace hyperbaric chambers has advanced considerably in recent years. Today’s largest state-of-the-art chambers are integrated into hospital architecture and function as treatment rooms. These facilities accommodate a wide range of patient monitoring and care equipment and enable clinicians and caregivers to attend to patients directly throughout treatment.
Modern multiplace chambers may also include one or more airlocks. While all chambers include a door that is sealed during chamber pressurization, the double doors of an airlock enable staff and patients to leave the chamber while it remains fully pressurized. Chambers with multiple
airlocks can treat groups of patients requiring different treatment pressures and durations. Airlock chambers are often also equipped with smaller airlock hatches that permit clinicians to safely pass medicines, blood samples, and other small objects into and out of the chamber.
Mild Hyperbaric Chambers
The last type of hyperbaric chamber is the Mild hyperbaric Chamber. The mild hyperbaric chamber is pressurized with air to between 1 and 1.5 times the normal atmospheric pressure. mHBOT. Being a newer therapy, mHBOT has only been officially approved by the FDA for acute mountain sickness,
