Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy For Children

Hyperbarics Oxygen Therapy For Children/ pediatrics is an emerging field.  With The technology becoming more and more accessible,  families around the world turning to HBOT.  But is hyperbaric rite for your child?  In this article I will try to help answer this question.

In the field of hyperbaric there is two distinct classes of hyperbaric chambers. Mild hyperbaric chamber and “Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers (Types Of Hyperbaric Chambers)It is important to know and understand them both and their approved uses.

According to the FDA, there are  “13 conditions that have been approved treatment of through the use of HBOT. Here is the approved list”:
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Air or gas embolism
  • Exceptional blood loss
  • Crush injury, compartment syndrome
  • Clostridial myositis -gas gangrene
  • Decompression sickness
  • Intracranial abscess
  • Skin grafts and flaps
  • burns
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Delayed radiation injury
  • Necrotizing soft tissue infections
  • Enhancement of healing in selected problem wounds such as: such as diabetic foot, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy
This is not the same for mild hyperbaric chambers, please don’t get them confused.   Mild hyperbaric chambers are only approve by the FDA for low oxygen levels (hypoxia).  THAT IS IT!  It is not billable under insurance, nor is there enough scientific evidence that is conclusive enough to make any such statements.

According to the FDA article Don’t Be Misled. “Patients may incorrectly believe that these devices have been proven safe and effective for uses not cleared by FDA, which may cause them to delay or forgo proven medical therapies,” says Nayan Patel, a biomedical engineer in FDA’s Anesthesiology Devices Branch. “In doing so, they may experience a lack of improvement and/or worsening of their existing condition(s).”

Patients may be unaware that the safety and effectiveness of HBOT has not been established for these diseases and conditions, including:
  • AIDS/HIV
  • Autism
  • Memory loss
  • Alzheimer’s
  • PTSD
  • TBI
  • Brain Injury
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Bell’s Palsy
  • Depression
  • Stroke
  • Heart Disease
  • Hepatitis
  • Migraine
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Sports Performance
  • Sports Injury
Patel says in the article that the FDA has received 27 complaints from consumers and health care professionals over the past three years about treatment centers promoting the hyperbaric chamber for uses not cleared by the agency”.

With the introduction of mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy, patient and physicians have turned to them as a source of care or income.  But it is important that you understand what hyperbaric is approved for and not.   Do not be misled into deceptive marketing campaigns trying to lures you into their service or products.

So is hyperbaric right for your child?  I can’t say.  But as a consumer it is important that you know the risks,  difference between the chambers, therapies, what is approved and not approved conditions.  You can go to the FDA website or consult your primary care or treating physician to get more information.  By doing these steps, this will help you decide if hyperbaric is right for your child or not.
