15 Contraindications Of Hyperbaric
As amazing as hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is and with all the amazing stories of people’s lives being changed from HBOT. There are stil conditions that need to be seriously considered hyperbaric oxygen therapy as a form of care. These chamber can look simple, safe and easy to use. It seems just about anyone that can get in one can do it. That is not the case at all. There are some serious conditions that you need to take into consideration before trying HBOT. I have listed 15 contraindications of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Before seeing a patient, buying a chamber or considering HBOT it is vitally important that you know the 15 contraindications of hyperbaric. The following are relative contraindications, meaning that a specialist physician must make special consideration before HBO treatment begins. The contraindications include:
- Sinus infections
- Pregnancy
- Cardiac disease
- COPD with air trapping
- Upper respiratory infections
- High fevers
- emphysema with CO2 retention
- A history of thoracic surgery : usually not considered a contraindication
- Malignant disease- Cancers
- Pneumothorax- Hole in chest
- Symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, chest tightness, fatigue, a rapid heart rate,
- Sever otic barotraumas
- Patients should not undergo HBOT if they are taking or have recently taken the following drugs:
- Doxorubicin (Adriamycin)–A chemotherapeutic drug. This drug has been shown to potentiate cytotoxicity during HBO therapy.
- Cisplatin–Also a chemotherapeutic drug.
- Disulfiram–Used in the treatment of alcoholism.
- Mafenide acetate–Depresses bacterial infections in burn wounds

Before considering hyperbaric it is important to first consult with your primary care or treating physician first. As you will need to go through a physical and medical history before being prescribed to use a HBOT chamber. Prescription are required by your physician to purchase or recieve treatment with a hyperbaric chamber. It is not a secret that people are out there treating patients, selling chambers, making false claims with no medical training or physician’s degree or license. I would be very weary of these people they are commiting medical fraud and putting people’s lives in danger. Maybe I should add that to the list of contraindications, sneaky under qualified sales people and business seeing patients without any formal training or education. You can see the risk of doing business with both.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may seem like the safe, fix all medical device. Hyperbaric chambers need to be respected. They are are pressurized chamber made of acrylic, steel or both and vinyl. As the pressure is builds up and if not operated correctly it could cause harm, severe body damage or even death. So it is vitally important that you know what you are doing before considering HBOT.
