Is hyperbaric covered under insurance?
One of the most common questions that I get, Is hyperbaric cover under insurance? In this article I will discuss and answer this question. But first you will need to understand the difference between hyperbaric chambers, approved and off label uses. Once we understand this, it will help us answer this question.
There are two classes of hyperbaric chambers
1. Medical Grade High Pressure Chambers These chambers are approve for treating 13 conditions. You will find these chambers in a medical clinic or hospital. The treatment consist of breathing in 100% oxygen under pressure exceeding 2.0 ATA or higher. Use and treatment with these chambers can be covered by your insurance provider.
- Monoplace These chambers made typically of acrylic and metal and are filled with 100% oxygen. It is important not to use or ware anything that could cause a spark. These chamber are very safe when used by properly trained professionals that have the right education and certifications.
- Multi-place These chambers are large, can fit multiple people, are filled with air and supplied oxygen via hood or mask. These chamber can have multiple air lock so medical staff and patients can enter and exit the chamber wile it is in use.
2. mild Hyperbaric Chambers These chambers are for home or private use and approved for only low oxygen levels. They are generally made from a flexible vinyl material. This chambers are brought to pressure by air compressors you plug into the wall and supplied oxygen via an oxygen concentrator. Use of this chamber is not covered under insurance in any way.
- 1.3 ATA – Safe for home or office use in the US.
- 1.5 -2.0 ATA For Sale outside of US or Medical Doctors License is required.
Hyperbaric Treatments Insurance Can Cover
Only high pressure medical grade chambers are approved to treat these 13 conditions that can be covered by insurance.
- Carbon monoxide intoxication
- Diabetic wounds
- Gas embolism
- Progressive necrotizing infections
- Gas gangrene
- Crush injuries
- Osteoradionecrosis
- Peripheral arterial insufficiency
- Chronic refractory osteomyelitis,
- Preservation of compromised skin grafts
- Soft tissue radionecrosis
- Decompression illness
- Cyanide poisoning
- Actinomycosis,
- Traumatic peripheral ischemia
Not Covered Under Insurance
All off label uses There is a large number of off label uses for HBOT but that are recognized or approved be federal agencies. It is important for you know and understand that by using hyperbaric oxygen therapy could worsen conditions or symptoms. Some of the popular “Off Label Uses” are: Autism, Stroke, Sports performance, Memory loss, Alzheimer’s, PTSD, Stroke
Mild hyperbaric chamber treatments, purchases or rentals This is the most common question I get. I am sorry to say that no most insurances do not pay for your purchase rental or treatment with a mild hyperbaric chamber.
Unprescribed treatment It is important for you to fist see you primary car or treating physician before considering HBOT as a form a treatment. You should discuss uses, scientific data and why or why not use HBOT as a preferred treatment option.
